Growing up, my family's move from the North to the Midlands inadvertently led me to switch dance schools, a decision that shaped my dance journey in unexpected ways. While my initial school boasted exceptional teachers and invaluable training, the transition to a new location prompted a shift to the nearest dance studio, which, although not subpar, didn't quite meet the standards I had become accustomed to. Reflecting on this experience, I realised the importance of informed decision-making in choosing the right dance school.
Now, as both a qualified dance teacher and a parent who navigated the school selection process first-hand, I'm eager to share insights gleaned from personal and professional experiences. With the dance education landscape teeming with options, it's crucial to embark on the selection journey equipped with the right knowledge. Here are six simple yet vital actions to consider when seeking the perfect dance school for your child.
Choosing the right dance school for your child can be a daunting task. With so many options available, it's essential to consider several factors to ensure your child receives quality instruction in a safe and nurturing environment. Here are some key tips to help you navigate the process and find the perfect dance school for your aspiring dancer.
1. Research Dance Styles and Programs
Start by researching different dance styles and programs available in your area. Consider your child's interests and goals, whether they're interested in ballet, jazz, hip-hop, or contemporary dance. Look for schools that offer a variety of classes and programs to cater to different age groups and skill levels.
2. Check Qualifications and Experience
When evaluating dance schools, inquire about the qualifications and experience of the instructors. Look for teachers who have professional training and experience in their respective dance styles. The private dance sector is largely unmonitored, however some of the larger examining bodies, such as The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) and The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance (ISTD), insist that their registered teachers engage with continued professional development (CPD) every year to qualify for membership renewal. Additionally, consider the school's reputation and track record of producing skilled dancers and successful performances.
3. Visit the Dance School
Schedule a visit to the dance school to observe classes and meet with the staff. Pay attention to the studio's facilities, cleanliness, and safety measures. Take note of the class sizes and student-to-teacher ratios (this should be approximately 1:15) to ensure your child receives personalized attention and instruction. A visit also presents an opportune time to read through the school's policies (see step 5), such as safeguarding and GDPR, etc., and if these are not in place.... run for the hills!
4. Consider Class Atmosphere and Culture
Assess the atmosphere and culture of the dance school to determine if it aligns with your child's personality and learning style. Look for a supportive and inclusive environment where students are encouraged to express themselves creatively and develop confidence and self-esteem through dance.
5. Review Policies and Fees
Review the school's policies regarding attendance, dress code, recitals, and tuition fees. Make sure you understand the commitment required and any additional costs associated with costumes, performances, and competitions. Consider your budget and financial constraints when comparing different dance schools.
6. Seek Recommendations and Reviews
Word of mouth has to be the most reliable and reassuring method to ensure that your little one is in the right school. So, ask around for recommendations from other parents, friends, or dance professionals who have experience with local dance schools. You can also research online reviews and testimonials, and take to local advertising groups on social media, to gather feedback from current and former students and parents. Nothing is going to trump a personal endorsement from an adult that you trust!
Choosing the right dance school for your child is a significant decision that can impact their passion for dance and overall development. By considering factors such as dance styles, instructor qualifications, class atmosphere, and fees, you can make an informed choice that supports your child's love of dance and helps them thrive in their artistic journey.
